Design Process

This begins with a conversation. We talk with you about the scope of work desired and share any initial ideas.  Moving forward, the designer may request time to sit quietly in the existing environment before drawing the Preliminary Plan. This is usually a plan view document brought to the table and adjusted as needed as the new form is discovered and developed. The final Landscape Plan guides building and planting of the new landscape, which may be completed in a season, or in logical phases over a number of years. The designer is often engaged to supervise construction and placement of sculpture, boulders and other significant elements.

Design on a Budget

Whether you are new to working with design professionals or wish to test the waters in this important relationship, a few hours of consultation is a great way to begin working with the Bluestem team.  During these meetings you can gather substantial information with a modest investment.

You may take notes and keep any sketches the designer makes to illustrate a concept for your builder. It is also possible for the designer to paint directly on the ground or flag areas of the landscape to be changed. We call it Real-time Design. This is a way to bring an experienced eye to the logic and lines of the garden when there is not a large purse for the project.
